Kareena Kapoor, often informally referred to as Bebo born on 21 September 1980 is an Indian film actress who appears in Bollywood films. She was born to a family where her parents, Randhir Kapoor and Babita, and elder sister Karisma were actors. She is the granddaughter of actor and filmmaker Raj Kapoor, great granddaughter of actor Prithviraj Kapoor, and niece of actor Rishi Kapoor.
Despite her family acting background, her father strongly disapproved ladies from entering the acting profession since it conflicted with the maternal duties and responsibilities of woman in the family. This led to a conflict between her parents and finally her mother left the house with her daughters. After her parent’s separation, she was bought up in Lokhandwala by her mother, who worked several jobs to support her two daughters until the elder daughter Karisma debuted as an actress in 1991. Later in the year 2007, her parents were once again together.
Kareena Kapoor did her initial schooling in Mumbai and Dehradun. After graduating from the boarding school, she studied commerce for two years at Mithibai College in Vile Parle, Mumbai. Kareena Kapoor, then registered for a three months computer course in microcomputers at Harvard University in the United States. She later developed an interest in law and enrolled into Government Law College in Churchgate, during this period she became immersed in Law books and developed a long lasting passion for reading. However after completing one year at Churchgate, she realized that she is not apt for academics and returned to her initial plan of becoming an actress. She began training in an acting institute in Andheri, mentored by Kishore Namit Kapoor, a member of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTI).
Kareena Kapoor faced the media spotlight from a very young age, but did not make her acting debut until the making of the movie Refugee (2000). Though she was bagged with many movies in the meanwhile, but none acted in her favor. Her major break was through the movie Kabhie Khushi Kabhi Gham in the year 2001 which casted many super stars, the movie was a major financial success and became India’s second highest-grossing film of the year. During the year 2002-2003, she experienced a set-back in her career.
Later in the year 2004, she marked the beginning of her work in more serious films, most of which would bring her critical acclaim rather than commercial success. Kareena Kapoor’s portrayal of Chameli garnered her Filmfare Special Performance Award and the film acted as a turning point in her career as an actress. In the same year she earned Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress for the movie Dev. In the upcoming years, she had various good movies in hand and also movies like Omkara bagged her Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress and other movies like Kurbaan, 3 Idiots bagged the Filmfare Best Actress Award.
Kareena Kapoor was also involved in various humanitarian works like she conducted various stage shows and campaigns so as to lift the fund. Kareena Kapoor was also appointed as the brand ambassador of the Shakti campaign, a project launched by NDTV, to help fight violence against woman.
